Newport Wafer Fab (NWF) is the world’s first integrated silicon, and compound on silicon, wafer fab, providing manufacturing services for the world’s first Compound Semiconductor Cluster (CS Connected) and the wider global foundry market.
Launched in September 2017 after the successful acquisition of the former Infineon wafer fab located in an impressive high technology campus in the West of Newport South Wales. NWF is now an open-access foundry, providing volume manufacturing services for the Silicon, CS and Photonics markets.
NWF offers a unique service as the world’s first foundry dedicated to compound semiconductor on silicon and silicon chip manufacturing. The fab itself is a high volume, eight inch 0.18µm foundry; the largest wafer-fab in the United Kingdom
The site has built a reputation for fast and agile process development combined with benchmarked levels of production service. As a key part of CS Connected, NWF is well positioned to serve the emerging photonics and compound on silicon markets across the globe.
Newport Wafer Fab’s Director of Quality and External Affairs Sam Evans said
“This famous site was established over thirty years ago to introduce silicon technologies into the United Kingdom. We again find ourselves as the critical launch pad for the semiconductor industry in Wales and the UK. As the world’s first integrated silicon and compound on silicon semiconductor foundry we provide a service that enables our customers to succeed in their fields of expertise.
Products manufactured at NWF drive future technologies in the communications, automotive, aerospace, telecom and medical industries amongst others, improving how we live, work and spend our leisure time. NWF’s membership of CS Connected, the world’s first compound semiconductor cluster, will position the company as a key partner in one of the most important hi-tech hubs in the UK.
“We have a minimum two-year supply agreement with Infineon. This will create a silicon runway for the business, enabling the site to introduce new foundry customers. We are also working closely with our CS Connected partners to support and enable exciting innovations in many industries thanks to the advance of compound semiconductor and photonics applications.”
“CS Connected is a collaboration between non-competitive organisations in Wales and the UK, with the objective of building a unique high value supply chain. This technology community, supported by the Welsh and UK Government offers bespoke solutions utilising Compound Semiconductor materials. NWF will provide volume manufacturing services for this cluster and any partners, including SME’s who can potential hire space from our open-access campus facility.”
“This is an exciting opportunity for Wales and we’re delighted that Newport Wafer Fab will be an integral partner. We employ over 480 people at our state-of-the-art facility. All our staff are switched on, talented individuals who exhibit excellent problem-solving skills. These are high-value; highly skilled jobs that will help increase the national GVA. The cluster will build and keep IP in Wales, the ‘high value’, wealth-creating part of the industry.”
